Hookah Ban in Melbourne? - Is this the end of relaxed nights with a good Shisha?
Apparently, well known Australian health groups do not like Shisha as much as we do...surprise. Cancer Council, Heart Foundation, and many more grouped together to put a stop to indoor Shisha & Hookah smoking. They want the local government to make changes to current legistlation, which bans all forms of tobacco (except hookah tobacco!) from being smoked in enclosed areas such as restaurants, bars, public buildings etc. They argue that Shisha smoke contains more nicotine than cigarettes and secondary smoke is harmful to staff and customers. Of course, such a ban could seriously impact business owners financially, especially in a multicultural city like Melbourne with the most Shisha bars in the country. Of course there might be a way around this ban by using steamstones or herbal tobacco, or at least promoting the use of herbal tobacco...But what will be next, and will the law hit other cities like Adelaide, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast?
